To whom it may concern,

      I have been a practicing trial attorney, in Des Moines, Iowa, specializing in construction law for forty-one years. During that time, I have been involved with multiple construction projects from very large multi-million dollar complex commercial to residential.

      G.H. Construction was our home designer and general contractor. We commenced construction on our home at the end of March, 2003. It was completed on schedule and within budget eight months later. at the end of November 2003. This was the first home my wife and I had built. Needless to say, we approached the design and the construction very conservatively. This was particularly true because of my background and the fact that we were doing it from 1900 miles away. Also, because building a house in the coastal mountains of Oregon, with its high winds, steep grades and earthquake issues, is not a simple engineering task.

      Gordon Hood and G.H. Construction's approach to this project was totally professional from the beginning. G.H. Construction's attention to detail and responsiveness to early design issues was excellent. We proposed the design concepts. Gordon utilized those to prepare the design. He proposed a design budget and we entered into a formal design agreement with G.H. Construction. The budget and timeliness on the design completion was fully in accord with our expectations. Gordon worked with us to develop and implement the design of our dream house. More importantly, there were no surprises. Many of Gordon's early design and engineering suggestions saved us substantial construction expenses later on when the house was being constructed. These included the placement of the house on the lot to our best advantage. It also included the smart wiring of the house and suggestions along those lines. Gordon also made multiple suggestions for inclusion of finish items which has already added significantly to the enjoyment of our home. I found G.H. to be not only a competent builder, but one who is current on the latest technology which might be desired in a new home.

      We entered into a formal written construction contract with G.H. Construction, basically utilizing its form contract. During construction we received, on a timely basis, waivers of mechanics liens as the work was completed. The monthly progress billings were done on the basis of work done and were not front end loaded. Gordon consistently consulted with us when any construction issue was perceived to possibly arise. There were very few of these and no surprises in the construction phase. When the few issues we had did arise, Gordon always took the high road and assumed design responsibility. We found his knowledge of and careful selection and/or recommendation of sub-contractors, material and finish work providers played a very significant role in the satisfaction we had in the construction of our home.

      We had anticipated that we would rent a home in the Pacific City area during the critical finish stages of construction and my wife would stay there and supervise that work. As the work progressed from the initial earthwork through framing and early stub-ins, it became obvious to us that we did not need to be on site constantly with this general contractor. Rather, we determined to visit the site monthly and generally rely upon the trust and the knowledge that we had engaged an exceptionally qualified and honest general contractor to do our work. We were never disappointed in that decision. Thus, a project that started out with fear and trepidation became one of great pleasure and anticipation for my wife and me. A rather extraordinary statement for a long-time construction lawyer. We would recommend G.H. Construction with our qualification.
